Histologic finding of the Healing process of meniscal tear in rabbits

Abstract
The semilunar cartilage have a very limitted blood supply.
By arterial injection with an opaque medium, one can discern a network of fine vessels from the convex border of the meniscus but disappearing almost immediately. Because of this, one might expect healing in peripheral meniscal injury, but none in tears limited to the semilunar cartilage itself.
This paper is a report of our experiments on the healing of semilunar cartilage injury of rabbits.
Meniscal injury with a No. 11 Knife-blade was performed on the medial menisci of both knee joints of the 40 young rabbits of 6-week old (Group I), weighing from 400 gm to500gm and 40 adult rabbits (Group II) weighing from 2000gm to 2500gm.
In both groups left side meniscus was incised vertically while right side meniscus was incised horizentally at just anterior site of medial collateral ligament.
In both-groups, meniscus specimen were obtained from both knee joint 1, 2, 3, 6, and 16 weeks respectively following meiscal injury.
,All the knee joints of the rabbits were not fixed. They were permitted free movement after operation.
Serial histologic section were performed at 6 pm and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for the histologic examination. .
The results were as follows:
1. There is no difference in meniscal healing between young and adult rabbits.
2. When the semilunar cartilage was incised vertically,. the two fragments were separated at a distance of 3 to 5mm. The free space thus produced was obliterated by an ingrowth of connective tissue from synovial menbrane, linking the two fragments firmly together in 3 weeks or 6 weeks meniscal injury at peripheral part. But most of the group I and II, there were not obliterated by any tissue at centeral part of injured menisus.
Many vessels were seen at the connective tissue of the free space in one week meniscal incision, but the
vessels were few in the connective tissue of the free space in 2 weeks and 3 weeks meniscal incision.
3. Most of the group I and 11, there were not completely healed at central of meniscus but completely healed
at peripheral lesion of vertically and horizontally incised menisci.
